Baltic market - a growing opportunity for Welsh businesses

A sum of €10.6 billion will be channelled from the EU to businesses in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia by 2013 which offers a potentially attractive opportunity for Welsh businesses across a range of sectors.

The Baltic market is relatively small and seen as a good opportunity for smaller companies interested in moving into international trade.

International Business Wales – the international trade and investment arm of the Welsh Assembly Government - is therefore offering the opportunity to discuss trade potential for the Baltics, as well as a number of other global regions, at its Explore Export Wales day, to be held in the Village Hotel, Cardiff on 1 July.

Individual meetings will mean that companies can discuss their specific offer and receive advice from UK government market specialists.

Highlights of Business Opportunities in the Baltics range from the reconstruction and expansion of the Riga Airport in Latvia (projected investments of €270 m) to plans to cover Estonia with Broadband Network by the year 2015  (projected investments of €400 m).

Human Resources projects have a strong emphasis on life-long learning with EU financial support for Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian companies to train their employees amounting to €212 m by 2013 while €233m will be allocated for R&D related activities in businesses in these states to increase the competitiveness of their economies.
